EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Position Description
The Children’s Museum of St. Johns (CMSJ) in St. Augustine, Florida is seeking a dynamic, visionary leader with a proven track record of success in nonprofit management to serve as its founding Executive Director. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the founding ED will provide direction and leadership for all aspects of the organization to achieve CMSJ’s mission and goals. Ideal candidates will have a passion for education in all its forms, an appreciation for creativity, and the ability to embody and communicate these qualities as a primary ambassador for CMSJ in the community.
Organization Overview
Founded in May 2007 and granted 501-c-3 nonprofit status in July 2007, the mission of the Children’s Museum of St. Johns (CMSJ) is to offer interactive experiences to children and families which inspire creativity and a lifelong love of learning. As an emerging “Museum without Walls,” CMSJ has been led for the past four years by an active Board of Directors and many dedicated volunteers. With an exhibit concept plan in place and a museum site under contract, CMSJ now seeks to hire a full-time Executive Director to oversee all aspects of establishing and managing a new children’s museum in the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida.
Pre-Opening Responsibilities
- Oversee renovation of museum site, a unique collection of nine historic houses in downtown St. Augustine
- Develop and implement an estimated $5 million capital campaign
- Manage exhibit design and fabrication process for five identified core theme areas
- Create organizational structure and hire staff as necessary to open and operate the museum
Ongoing Responsibilities
- Oversee budgets to ensure financial integrity, growth, and stability of the organization
- Develop programmatic activities to support and complement the exhibit offerings throughout the museum
- Develop and manage effective annual fundraising strategies to meet organizational goals
- Build and sustain strong relationships with key partner constituents in the public, private and nonprofit sectors
- Oversee day-to-day museum operations
Qualifications
- College degree required
- 10+ years experience in senior leadership positions
- Demonstrated success in fundraising and implementation of start-up projects
- Experience working with nonprofit boards and volunteers
- Experience in museum administration, particularly children’s museums, is strongly preferred
Compensation
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
